University of Wisconsin Should Be Ashamed of Themselves

The University of Wisconsin should be ashamed of themselves. Tuition has gone up 6.9% this year and that is an affront to all hard working Americans. Do you see a link her between health care and education?

I personally believe there is a link between the two because both have an interesting characteristic. Each has the consumer who uses the service not being  the final payer of the service. In each case, the consumer receives a lot of money from a third party entity. Therefore, there is no pressure from the consumer to reduce costs. In medical cases, most are paid by either insurance or by the Government for those who are not insured. In the education area, the Government provides grants or below market interest rate loans.

What kills me is that this then gives the producers (i.e., the educational communities and the medical providers) the right to be incredibly wasteful. What is even funnier is two of the staunchest conservatives who blog Ann Althouse and Glenn Reynolds are part of this problem. While they rant and rave about the "bad liberal Government" they are actually part of organizations which are completely out of control and are dependent on the Government largess to survive!

This is the typical scenario I see developing more and more by conservatives, one of incredible hypocrisy. The military, who are incredibly conservative, depend  on Government largess to continue to get 100% healthcare, retirement at ridiculous ages, cost of living (COLA) increases etc; All things which the private industry cannot provide due to the vaunted capitalistic system that the conservatives love so much.

We then have two very conservative professors at University of Wisconsin and University of Tennessee who are conservative as heck but they make a living  off of the Government and the largess provided by the Government.

As, I say about everything, follow ACTIONS not words. Bush loves the military but refuses to have his daughters serve. Reynolds and Althouse push for conservative thought but make a living off of the Government. Schoen and the other idiotic LTC are staunchly conservative but they want the Government tit to provide them guaranteed healthcare and retirement for life (indexed for inflation!).

Cornell President Resigns

In a surprising announcement, Cornell President Jeffrey Lehman, who is also a class of '77 Alum, has resigned citing differences with the Board of Trustees. He was a well liked President and I am sure there is more to this story.

Admissions is Against the Middle Class

Fred Schoeneman calls out the admissions to high priced universities for what it is: discriminatory against the middle class. It is far more about economics than race. My experience is that the poor will get what they need from the financial aid office and the rich do not need it. The middle class will not be able to afford the education their children deserve.

What is also interesting, IMHO, is that the same universities who preach "egalitarianism" are the biggest offenders of it. They are pricing thousands of people in the US out of the education market due to their desire to build "taj Mahals" instead of just concentrating on education.
